» Announcing hihigalleri!

Yes, I realise that “hihigalleri” just might be the worst name since the dawn of image galleries, but whatever. It won’t be called it for long, I just needed a name for it now, and couldn’t be bothered to use a terribly boring name (YAIG (“Yet Another Image Gallery”), anyone?) or make up a good one.

Anyway, hihigalleri is a 100% new image gallery which currently lacks its own web page. It was developed by me for my dads web site (he’s a photographer; no link yet, no content there yet), and I’ve modified it so that it can be used by other people, too. Well, it was developed from the start with that in mind, really.
The only place it’s used actively is at my Bulgaria pictures page.

The version I’m releasing today is 0.1 – the first public release. As the version number suggests, this is hardly a mature version. It does work, it has all the basic features a image gallery should have (I think), and some more stuff that either my dad needed or I’ve added. It is mostly very simple, and I intend to make it stay simple.

The whole reason why I made this was that I couldn’t find any good, free and simple image galleries that did that I wanted it to do. There were poor simple ones and good huge ones, but I couldn’t find any good simple ones.. the goal of hihigalleri is that it will be that good and simple gallery, and that someone looking for the same as me will find it and find it useful!

Depending on feedback and interest, hihigalleri will be further developed to become that system. It’s not intended to be he ultimate image gallery, but rather a good, solid product for someone wanting something simple.

Anyway, enough of the philosophy etc.. time for download and issues :)

Download hihigalleri 0.1

System requirements:

  • Apache 1.3/2.0
  • PHP 4.2.0+ with GD2
  • MySQL 3.23.x+

You’ll find installation instructions in INSTALL.txt inside the tgz file. Other than that, there is no documentation, but most things should be fairly self explanatory. More or less. You’ll figure it out, I’m sure.
For the people who have no idea on how to install this: I’ll set up an online demo where you can log in and try it out some other day :)

Four things to note:

  1. If the URLs at the public page (not the administration) doesn’t work, go into the administration => Preferences and turn “nice URLs” off. That should make it work.
  2. To add images via FTP/local file access, put them into the “incoming” folder in the “admin” folder.
  3. It does have bugs. More than a couple. That doesn’t prevent it from working, though.
  4. There might be some problems with some browsers. I haven’t really tested it too well on all browsers just yet (it is 0.1, after all).

And on this, feedback is everything. If I get no feedback, I doubt I’ll do much more on this project (at least for now). If I do get feedback (some/lots/too much), then I’ll probably use the spare time I have to shape it up and add all the small cool features that I want to add (stuff to make it simpler to use, mostly).

This page will be used as “home page” for hihigalleri at the moment, and support questions should be asked here or mailed to me at eivind at this domain (ununique.net). I’d prefer getting the feedback here, really, but if you want to email it, go ahead.
And despite the fact that this is a 0.1 release, I appreciate all kinds of bug reports and/or other feedback.

Thanks, and I hope that you get it running and that you like it!

Comments?
